This wiki has been spammed. As soon as it showed up on Google even a little bit, it got attacked. I reacted by blocking all account creation, so this is no longer a wiki. It's just a "blog on steroids." I prefer to use my energy creating content (even though virtually no one reads any of it) than fighting spammers.

The Attacks
The spamming started at the end of September, when this site started to show up just a little bit on Google. I only discovered it a week later. The spammers were discrete, to avoid killing the hen that lays the golden eggs, as it were. (Seen any golden eggs around here lately?) And fortunately the site had been configured to require creating an account before editing.

I quickly modified the LocalSettings.php file to allow account creation only by WikiSysop. I then logged on as WikiSysop and blocked one by one all 8 unwanted users, each of whom seemed to have lain only one golden egg. I consulted "All Pages," and with a bit of work created the following record:

*user name --- date ----- page name
*8 r8y d9d -- --- 5 Oct ------ 雅思枪手13764107295雅思代考雅思
*8P2q3K68 ---- 30 Sept ---- 雅思枪手QQ：27939721代考雅思代考托福代考

They all come from GuessWhere, except Luck688. There was also a user Noinfo126 who seems to have created no pages. The page from Luck668 contains nuggets like this:

*He honestly performed his promise to the wow power leveling man of many cures.

As WikiSysop I could have deleted these files, but I decided to leave them for the moment (even though that way the scumbags will get the payoff - and maybe I will too). Take a look at Special:Allpages.

Now I have to figure out how to allow new user accounts without getting spammed....

And how did the spammers create new pages, without first making a link in an existing page?

Statistics about the Spammers
The statistics about visitors to this site are furnished by the server-provider Ouvaton, who gets them from a professional group. They are rather incomplete and difficult to interpret, since what is shown is often the server and not the individual computer, and since visits from one host on multiple days are often grouped together.

I've listed below only the visitors from China (as identified by the string ".cn" at the end of the address), since they are easiest to identify as probable spammers.

*Hosts -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Pages -- Hits -- Date last visit
*38.167.37.58.broad.xw.sh.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 3 -- 3 -- 17 Oct 2007
*207.49.109.125.broad.wz.zj.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 9 -- 30 -- 16 Oct 2007
*179.163.37.58.broad.xw.sh.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 3 -- 3 -- 13 Oct 2007
*69.146.143.219.broad.bj.bj.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 1 -- 1 -- 12 Oct 2007
*58.158.143.219.broad.bj.bj.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 1 -- 1 -- 10 Oct 2007
*10.170.37.58.broad.xw.sh.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 3 -- 3 -- 10 Oct 2007
*135.175.37.58.broad.xw.sh.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 3 -- 3 -- 04 Oct 2007
*43.146.212.58.broad.nj.js.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 3 -- 3 -- 01 Oct 2007
*43.146.212.58.broad.nj.js.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 13 -- 13 -- 30 Sep 2007
*110.145.212.58.broad.nj.js.dynamic.163data.com.cn -- -- 5 -- 5 -- 30 Sep 2007

The dates of the visits line up perfectly with the dates of the spammings on 30 Sep and 01 Oct. But the Chinese spammer of 05 Oct is unlisted. Perhaps this was the visitor of 04 October, shown on a different date because of the time difference? Or perhaps the statistics for these visits got grouped with later visits from the same spammer.

What about the visitors after the 05 October? I blocked all new account creation, so these visits might be:

*Random hits generated by the fact that the site is listed on the Chinese google
*Visits from the previous spammers coming back to try again (and foiled, haha)
*Visits from potential new spammers coming for a first try (and foiled, haha)

There seems no way to know what category the new visits belong to. I could always allow new accounts just to try to observe who does what...

I looked for a search chain that would be only in my article, and no other. I found the chain "WikiWikiWeb snowballed," which worked. The Google result was:
Since my Google speaks French, I went to the Google settings page to change the language. By chance I noticed that the list of available languages includes "Elmer Fudd." I set the language to that, and got things like:

::Tip: Twy wemoving quotes fwom youw seawch to get mowe wesults.
I thought that if I created a website my output would get on Google and at least a few people somewhere would read some of it. But I've created about 6 websites so far and NOBODY EVEN LOOKS AT ANY OF THEM. The statistics show that I am generally the only visitor on all of them.

(If you are by some quirk of fate reading this please send an email quick to [mailto:conviviality@ouvaton.org conviviality@ouvaton.org] to let me know the good news. Or log on to this wiki and edit ANYTHING.)

My main Convivial Tools website was visited by a Google bot or web crawler, probably because I tried to register the site on Open Directory (which is about as "open" as a locked bank vault). But the Google robot only crawled the first page of the site, and that page comes up so far down on the Google listings that I can't even find it myself.

Of course there are techniques for boosting websites upwards in the Google listings. There are even Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) contests where competitors try to come out on top of some arbitrary weird Google search. But I'm too busy developing content to pay attention to all that.

There also seem to be lots of other factors: the creators of successful sites or blogs are in contact with a community, or they have lots of friends, or their topics interest more people, or maybe sometimes they are just lucky. Whatever it takes, I obviously lack.

So why am I spending my time developing content for a series of websites that no one sees? Some possible answers:

* Because this is my fate, like Sisyphus forever rolling the rock back up the hill.
* Because maybe someday something will change, and someone will read a page or two somehow.
* Because the content can always be used elsewhere, such as copied onto Wikipedia or onto some other wiki.
* And just because.
A commercial website would be defined as one whose main purpose is to promote a profit-making activity, as would be determined according to pre-defined guidelines.

GING could operate using principles borrowed from other projects or mouvements, such as Open Directory, Wikipedia, Free Software and P2P.

Principles from Open Directory. Websites would apply for registration on GING by filling out a form on-line. The websites would be reviewed by volunteers to make sure that the websites were indeed non commercial and met other criteria to be determined. Each website would itself indicate the pages it wants to have crawled and listed, up to a set maximum number (for example, ten pages per website).

Principles from Wikipedia. The good behaviour of the registered sites would be checked by users, who would report violations to a review committee. Misbehaving sites could be removed from the listings either temporarily (first violation) or permanently (repeated violations). The review, discussion and democratic decision-making process would be similar to that used on Wikipedia.

Principles from Free Software. The software to run the system, including the mechanisms for site crawling and ranking, would be developed by the users.

Principles from P2P. Part of the vast computing power required would be provided by the personal computers of the users through a P2P mechanism.

Google is a Mafia.

Let us try to see both sides of this issue. Google offers a valuable service which is expensive to operate. It is therefore reasonable that they should be reimbursed for this effort.

Also, Google is faced with the explosion of sites and content on the web. With innovations such as on-line videos, social software and blog farms, the number of pages and posts to keep track of has become astronomical. It is therefore necessary for the indexing mechanism to select only those pages which are actually viewed by a significant number of visitors.

But even if Google had the best intentions in the world, their current situation is fundamentally unhealthy. They exercise a virtual monopoly, since their competitors are falling further and further behind. And their basic orientation is commercial, whereas money inevitably corrupts. Those with money pay experts in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to boost their Google ratings. This includes not only legitimate enterprises but also all of the sleeze-bag porn sellers, browser hijackers and other con-artists of the web. Meanwhile individuals or small groups trying to develop useful or interesting content for the web, but who lack expertise in SEO manipulation, often find themselves totally excluded from the Google listings.

It is thus necessary to develop alternatives to Google which will ignore commercial considerations and which will open up web access for legitimate small-scale websites. One such alternative might be GING.

GING is a recurrent acronym standing for "GING is not Google."

Richard Stallman invented the Free Software Movement with a project called GNU, which is a recurrent acronym for "GNU (is) not Unix." Actually GNU is a slightly modified form of the traditional recurrent acronym, because the "I" of "is" is left out.

GING is not Google. The idea is to apply Free Software principles towards the creation of an alternative to the Google search engine. I say Free Software and not Open Source Software, because this is one case where the whole point is to reject the overwhelming commercialization of the web. Google is right on the front lines of that commercialization, to the extent that the mechanisms for the listing and ranking of sites seem to be increasingly influenced by considerations of how much cash Google can stuff into their own pockets.

During the recent Storm Worm epidemic, experts calculated that the potential computing power of all of the zombie computers linked into the Storm Worm network amounted to the largest super-computer of all times. (How did it compare with Google's computing capacity?) Surely there must be some way to use P2P software to create enough computing capacity to make an alternative to Google.
To meet the multimachine processing needs of the crawl and index tasks, the Nutch project has also implemented a MapReduce facility and a distributed file system. These two facilities have been spun out into their own subproject called Hadoop.
This website is a database about people, websites, software and concepts in the world of wikis. It is a work in progress, and some sections are more complete than others.

A wiki is a website whose pages can be edited by any visitor. The first wiki, called WikiWikiWeb, was created by Ward Cunningham in 1995. Wikis were brought to the attention of the general public by the success of Wikipedia, an online collaborative encyclopedia created in 2001.

The present website presents information about wikis, organised into the categories shown below. For the structure of the site, see the Main Categories or go to :Category:Root.

:Category:Wiki People
People who played a role in the history of wikis or who are currently active in the development or maintenance of wiki websites or software. For an overview, see the Wiki People Narrative.

:Category:Wiki Websites
Significant wiki websites. For an overview, see the Wiki Websites Narrative.

:Category:Wiki Engines
Wiki engines are the software packages used to run wikis. For an overview, see the Wiki Engines Narrative.

:Category:Wiki Concepts
The users of wikis have developed a range of specific terms and concepts related to the structure, functions and utilisation of wikis. For an overview, see the Wiki Concepts Narrative.

About this Website
For suggestions about pages to browse, see Road Maps. For more information about the site itself, see About this Site. An intermittent blog maintained on and about this site can be accessed at Wikis Blog List.

This website operates under MediaWiki software and thus has the potential to be a Wiki. However, when the website began to be spammed (see Spam Attack), the configuration was changed so that only WikiSysop can create new accounts. The site currently operates as the creation of a single person. But as David Wiley says: "A wiki without contributors is nothing but a blog on steroids."

The Wikipedia article about MeatballWiki<br>
The Wikipedia MeatballWiki article states that MeatballWiki is a wiki dedicated to online communities, culture and hypermedia, which was the launching point for various wiki-based projects, and has become a central resource for the wider wiki community. The Wikipedia article also states that:
* MeatballWiki hosted a project journal concerning design of UseModWiki, a wiki program developed by Clifford Adams and used by MeatballWiki.
* MeatballWiki promoted the key concept of "barn raising": Sunir Shah created the first internet barnstar award there.
* MeatballWiki is a sister company of WikiWikiWeb, the first Wiki to be created.

The Wikipedia Discussion Page about MeatballWiki (and the Deletion Discussion Archive)<br>
Additional information can be found on the Wikipedia MeatballWiki Talk page. The MeatballWiki article was proposed for deletion but the decision was made to keep it. See the Deletion Discussion Archive. The reasons for deletion seem to have been that the article cited no sources and concerned a site with insufficient notability (notoriety). The full list of deletion arguments is given at the head of the Deletion Discussion Archive.

The main arguments for keeping the MeatballWiki article were that it was one of the oldest wikis, that its members were involved in developing what eventually became the Wikipedia software, and that the site remains a mine of useful information. It was also mentioned that MeatballWiki is often referred to on the Meta-Wiki site.

MeatballWiki mainstay SunirShah makes an appearance on the Deletion Discussion Archive, stating in particular: "I'm not entirely sure what you mean by citing sources ... The site is public. You can go see it yourself." Someone replied that the mere existence of the site is no substitute for citing sources, because investigating the site itself would consitute original research. At any rate a few citations seem to have been found. Note also that SunirShah is apparently considered to lack sufficient notability to merit a Wikipedia article: "SunirShah" redirects to "MeatballWiki".

Also on the Discussion Page, someone expresses surprize that the article remains merely a stub. And several users feel it should be merged with the article on Clifford Adams, since both articles are very short.

MeatballWiki in the Wikipedia article on WikiWikiWeb<br>
In the Wikipedia artile on Wiki Wiki Web the MeatBallWiki is listed as a "designated sister site" of the WikiWikiWeb. It is number 3 on the list in terms of number of pages (it tags in at 4622 pages, after WikiWikiWeb at 32138 and WhyClublet et 4777). Its founders are listed as Clifford Adams and Sunir Shah. (Who is
Richard Drake who founded WhyClublet?)

MeatballWiki in the Wikipedia article on UseModWiki<br>
Clifford Adams started developing the wiki engine UseModWiki in 1999 for his Usenet Moderation (Usemod) Project. Adams used the Perl programming language and took the code from AtisWiki, which was based on CvWiki, in turn based on Wiki Base, the wiki engine of the WikiWikiWeb. Pages in UseModWiki are stored in ordinary files, not in a relational database.

The first wiki to use UseModWiki was Clifford Adams's own usemod.com site. The second was MeatballWiki, created by Adams and Sunir Shah and dedicated to online communities. MeatballWiki was installed on the same usemod.com website in 2000. For most of 2001, UseModWiki was used to run all versions of Wikipedia. WikiWikiWeb's sister wiki the Adjunct, started in 2005, also runs on UseModWiki. UseModWiki is probably the most popular wiki software due to the relatively little computing power required and its ease of installation.

MeatballWiki on other Websites
http://www.wikiindex.org/MeatballWiki<br>
MeatballWiki is a wiki forum running on the wiki engine UseModWiki and started by Ontarian computer fan SunirShah on CliffordAdams's Internet domain usemod.com. (Note that, despite being on the same Internet domain, MeatballWiki is not part of Adams's wiki forum for demonstration of the wiki engine UseModWiki and which, like the wiki engine, is also called UseModWiki.) MeatballWiki was started to avoid discussion of "Wiki on Wiki" (discussion about WikiWikiWeb on its own pages). MeatballWiki describes the general tendencies observed on wikis and other on-line communities, for example the life cycles of wikis and people's behavior on them.<br>
MeatballWiki is a useful guide for on-line community practitioners, mostly in English, but a fair amount in French and some community members are German.<br>
Meatball also hosts the first TourBusStop, check out the WikiIndex:TourBusStop and is part of the RealNamesNetwork.<br>

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?MeatballWiki<br>
Meatball is a loose grouping of people who are interested in online communities, culture and hypermedia. We talk mostly on MeatballWiki and sometimes on the MeatballMailingList. The original goal was to focus on CollaborativeHypermedia but topics have ranged from intellectual property to CyberPunk to the confusion of UniformResourceIdentifiers. Occasionally, some of us bother to stop blathering and do some real work. You'll find some project journals on MeatballWiki too.<br>
Community discussions about how to run the community itself should be left here. Abstract discussions, or objective analyses of community are encouraged on MeatballWiki. -- SunirShah<br>

http://www.aboutus.org/MeatballWiki<br>
Although they are run on the same Internet domain, MeatballWiki is not part of the forum for UseModWiki. Founded in 2000 by Sunir Shah, MeatballWiki started as a place to have discussions about Wiki in a place outside of the original WikiWikiWeb located on Ward Cunningham's C2.com. This was to prevent "Wiki on Wiki" discussions on WikiWikiWeb.<br>
The community at MeatballWiki is a vibrant one, with the intent of helping online communities, culture and hypermedia. They also offer observations about other wikis and online communities. MeatballWiki, being a community about communities has itself become the launching point for other wiki-based projects and is a defacto resource for broader wiki concepts such as TheWikiWay.
One of the key concepts of MeatballWiki is that of BarnRaising -- the community gathering and collectively building towards a specific goal. The idea stems from the thought that it is nearly impossible for one person to build a barn, but through a community actively deciding to take on a specific goal, collaboration happens in ways that make the impossible possible, along the way this provides a social event where in members of a community learn about each other and become friends and really knit together as a community. The concept of "Barnstars" used on MeatballWiki, Wikipedia and many other wikis comes from this as a way of awarding and celebrating individuals within the community who helped with the monumental tasks.

http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM04/abstracts/114.html<br>
Sunir Shah edits the MeatballWiki, a “metawiki” focused on building online communities. Self-defined as a "community of communities: an intercommunity or metacommunity", it seems to be a community only because it is a group of people that has come together online to talk about what it means to be a community. What differentiates the MeatballWiki from many online meta-communities is that participants spend most of their time talking about sociology rather than technology; and when they do talk about technology, they do so in a social context.

http://www.sitepoint.com/article/what-is-a-wiki/4<br>
Wikis make great community sites, as well. Many wiki software packages allow users to register for usernames, putting a face to all the changes a particular person makes. The MeatballWiki is a hub for such online communities. Wiki-ers from all over use to MeatballWiki to come together and link their wikis with each other. The MeatballWiki members have even created a clever, creative tour bus trip of wikis.

http://socialsynergy.typepad.com/social_synergy/2007/05/citizendium_san.html<br>
It seems that forking in wiki communities is almost inevitable. And, forking need not be adversarial in nature. For instance, MeatballWiki is a fork of the original WikiWikiWeb. Later, CommunityWiki was a fork of MeatballWiki. It was originally an adversarial fork, but relationships re-established over time, and now both communities are close. OBM Wiki Hive is a non-adversarial fork of CommunityWiki, and is set up as a "wiki hive" to encourage forking.<br>

*8 r8y d9 ------- 5 Oct ------ @13764107295代考雅思代考雅思枪手QQ：27939721
*Luck668 -------- 4 Oct ------ Gold wow-power-leveling

The evening of the day I posted my big History of wikis article on Wikipedia, I wanted to see if it was on Google already. I knew from experience that it would take a few days before the new article was crawled, but I wanted to try anyway.

I looked for a search chain that would be only in my article, and no other. I found the chain "WikiWikiWeb snowballed," which worked. The Google result was:

::Your search - "WikiWikiWeb snowballed" - did not match any documents.

Writing this up in RainDog's blog, I wanted to capture the exact wording of the sentence "Your search ... did not match any documents" in English. Since my Google speaks French, I went to the Google settings page to change the language. By chance I noticed that the list of available languages includes "Elmer Fudd." I set the language to that, and got things like:

::Tip: Twy wemoving quotes fwom youw seawch to get mowe wesults.

The void search result shown above became:

::Youw seawch - "WikiWikiWeb snowballed" - did not match any documents. Oh, dat scwewy wabbit!
They're a load of laughs, they are, those Google guys.

Some visitors finally started showing up to browse this site, as I tell in my Blog for October. Nobody actually logged on or anything (other than a few spammers), but a couple of pages started showing up on Google. To see them, you have to Google some kinky combination, but they're there. For how long?

The bad news is that the home page of my Convivial Tools Encyclopedia site, which had finally been crawled by Googlebot and listed by Google (far down of course), has already entirely disappeared from Google.

I put an enormous amount of work into installing and configuring that site, and then into writing encyclopedia articles on the subject of Convivial Tools. After months of effort, only the first page of the site had been Googled. There was practically nothing on that frigging first page, it was just an entry point. And nobody read any of my articles, because no one other than a few close friends and relatives could even know that any of them were there: they weren't indexed on Google. There was only that miserable first page - and now even it is gone.

Apparently there is an explanation for this disappearance (there's always an explanation). The crawler looks to see if any changes have been made since it came the last time. If there aren't, it classes the site as inactive. But then why do some inactive sites hang on forever?

I'm starting to understand this whole Google business. It's a bigger monopoly than Microsoft! Some will say that Apple maintains competition in the one case, and Yahoo in the other, but the market shares speak for themselves. And Microsoft's stranglehold concerns only a particular techology (operating systems), whereas Google has a monopoly over the handling of global information. It's become more powerful than traditional media like newspapers or television, because there are many of them, but only one GoogleMafia.

What can we do to take back the control of our communication channels, to escape from the frenetic chase after Search Engine Optimisation? I can feel myself getting sucked in: my Google rating is becoming more important to me than what I have to say.

WE HAVE TO DEVELOP THE EQUIVALENT OF A FREE SOFTWARE ALTERNATIVE FOR THE SEARCH ENGINE.

One possibility would be GING is not Google.
