The Gang of Four are the authors of the book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software." They are:

The name of the book being too long for e-mail, it got shortened to "book by the gang of four," and then to "GOF book." ("Gang of Four" originally referred to a group of prominent Maoists accused in a show trial just after Mao's death.)
