The following is a narrative presentation of basic Wiki Concepts.

==Basic Wiki Concepts==
A [[Wiki]] is a website where any visitor can edit pages. The first Wiki was [[Ward Cunningham]]'s website [[WikiWikiWeb]]. Wikis were first brought to public attention by the collaborative on-line encyclopedia [[Wikipedia]].

==WikiModes and Editing==
[[WikiModes]] were first defined on the [[WikiWikiWeb]] as "modes of interaction and annotation" on the wiki. The principal modes are [[DocumentMode]], which is when a Wiki contribution is written in the third person and left unsigned, and [[ThreadMode]], which is a form of discussion where the wiki community holds a conversation. 

Ward Cunningham advocated use of [[DocumentMode]] in preference to [[ThreadMode]], in other words: [[DissertationFavoredOverDialog]]

Visitors were thus encouraged to edit pages.

[[ReFactoring]] improves the structure of code without changing the functionality of the application. The term has also come to mean rearranging a wiki page to improve it's structure.

An [[EditHint]] is a marker set to point out places where edits would be of benefit, such as to clarify the original intent or to apply a second opinion.

EditHint is the general tag, and there are numerous specialized refactoring tags, such as [[RefactorMe]], AnswerMe, [[DeleteMe]], [[DeleteWhenCooked]], DeleteThisPageSoon, TooLargeToGrasp, [[BrokenLink]], [[BrokenWhitespace]] and [[ToDo]].
