The following is a narrative presentation of basic Wiki Concepts.

==Basic Wiki Concepts==

A [[Wiki]] is a website where any visitor can edit pages. The first Wiki was [[Ward Cunningham]]'s website [[WikiWikiWeb]]. Wikis were first brought to public attention by the collaborative on-line encyclopedia [[Wikipedia]].

[[WikiModes]] were first defined on the [[WikiWikiWeb]] as "modes of interaction and annotation" on the wiki. The principal modes are [[DocumentMode]], which is when a Wiki contribution is written in the third person and left unsigned, and [[ThreadMode]], which is a form of discussion where the wiki community holds a conversation.  

[[Ward Cunningham]] advocated the use of [[DocumentMode]] rather [[ThreadMode]], in other words [[DissertationFavoredOverDialog]]. Each page was to begin with an [[OpeningStatement]], and visitors were encouraged to edit pages in the role of an anonymous [[WikiAuthor]].

 

One form of editing is [[ReFactoring]], which is a programming term which has come to mean rearranging a wiki page to improve it's structure.
