__NOTOC__
The information about convivial tools presented on this website is primarily review information rather than encyclopedic information or how-to information, as explained below:
+
I initially created this website in mid-2007 hoping that it would become a wiki devoted to the promotion of Convivial Tools.
*Review information presents a rapid overview and evaluation of a subject. This type of information is found for example on a Review Site, which Wikipedia defines as "a website on which people can post reviews for products or services".
+
*Encyclopedic information is detailed, objective and verifiable information, such as should be found in Wikipedia articles.
+
*How-to information is practical step-by-step instructions on how to do something, as is found on How-to Websites.
+

Although the name "Convivial Tools User Guide" might suggest that this is a how-to site, it is closer to a review site. Detailed how-to information should be posted to one of the How-to Websites.
+
In late 2007 I created a separate Convivial Tools website. At that time I had already created a significant number of pages about wikis on the present site (wikis being a good example of a "convivial tool"). It thus seemed appropriate to consacrate the present site entirely to the subject of wikis, and to the people, websites, software and concepts relating thereto.

Main topics on this Convivial Tools website
However, my attention soon turned elsewhere, and the present site stagnated during all of 2008 and much of 2009. Meanwhile I realized that wikis have gone mainstream, and that the subject has become both banal and overly vast. In coming back to the site today (in July 2009) to do a bit of ReFactoring, it seems more appropriate to limit the scope of the site to Wiki History.
The theme of this site is Convivial Tools, which Ivan Illich defined as tools which allow the user to operate with independent efficiency. Information is presented on the following topics, each of which illustrates the idea of "Convivial Tools":
+
*:Category:Convivial Tools (philosophical aspects)
+
*:Category:Free and Open Source Software
+
*:Category:Open Design
+
*:Category:Wikis
